The building is being constructed as one of the institutions of the Orphanage for "poor nobility and commoners (raznochintsy)" and became one of the first schools for for girls in Moscow. Its strict classicist architecture and large proportions are characteristic for public buildings of mature classicism. Ivan (Giovanni) Gilardiб holding the post of architect of the Orpanage, is known as an experienced practician. He made the reconstruction of the Widow's house, built the Mariinsky hospital upon the project of D. Quarenghi, raised few administration buildings of the Orphanage. Alexandrovsky Institute became the only realized project by the architect.
