The vast ensemble was built as a summer country seat of the Empress Catherine the Great following her Gothic tastes. The unordinary fantasy of Bazhenov had created a unique ensemble combined to constructions, graphically situated in the park, that are delicately inscribed in the estate's relief. Palaces, pavilions, bridges and gates were built upon the project of Bazhenov till 1785. Each of these constructions differs with the ingenuity of a plan and of artistic solutions. The architecture of the facades Bazhenov determined as a "tender Gothic". Against the backdrop of red brick walls cutout with ogeed embrasures, exedras and windows stood out elegant design of white-stone details.
