The building of the Gentry assembly (Assembly of the Nobility)

Majestic beauty of the hall is being defined by an outstanding Corinthian colonnade set around the perimeter and by a unique harmony of the composition of the space.

Reconstruction of the original view. Drawing by architect A. Kharlamova. 1954

It was an original decision to use the space of the inner court to create the Grand Hall, the most spacious ballroom and function hall in Moscow, that was later named the Hall of Columns. The reconstruction gives the image of the hall before the fire of 1812, when the painting on the ceiling and behing the colonnade was gone and never restored after.

Description
The town mansion of Moscow governor general V. Dolgorukov-Krymsky situated at the corner of Okhotny riad and Bolshaya Dmitrovka street was built in the middle of the XVIII century. In 1784 it was bought by Moscow Noble society for the Gentry assembly club and rebuilt by M. Kazakov in 1784-1787. The architect showed brilliant skills in the transformation of a construction belonging to different times to a classical ensemble. It is very characteristic for the Moscow classicist school not to demolish the old stone walls. As a result an asymmetric complex of buildings on the old mansion got the representative appearance of a great public place.
