Description
Project of the Grand Kremlin palace (1767-1775) impressed the contemporaries with its audacity and unprecedented scale. The project of large dimensions by V. Bazhenov surely attracted Catherine the Great with the possibility to show the achievements of national architecture.
The arrangement of the ensemble was conceived as integration with the city space. Large forms and expressive statuary of the main façade skirting the Kremlin hill were designed for far points survey. The system of squares and colonnades inside the Kremlin joined avenues and main lines of the city. Solemn pathetics of classical forms should have dominated.
The attention to the project was accentuated with the demonstration of plans and architectural model, as well as with great festive ceremonies. Careful elaboration of all the details of a hardest project and start of the construction activities make clear that Bazhenov was sure in its realization. But the fate in the person of Catherine the Great had its way and the project became a monument of an extraordinary architecture idea. In future time have shown that the classicist school by Bazhenov, influenced much the Moscow architecture. And first of all the history of the project taught Moscow architects to choose the realistic, viable scale of constructions.
