Description
Church of St. Barbara has a special place in the history of church architecture in Moscow at the time of mature classicism. By any variety of church architecture R. Kazakov had a chance to elaborate a show-piece of a compact centric domed church, small and very balanced in construction. Its beauty comes from the fineness of proportions and delicacy of order decoration. The set of architectural details of facades is typical for Moscow classicism: strict Corinthian porticos, Venetian windows, exedras, raised panels filled with gypsum rosaces. The high-class artistic taste of the architect has combined them in a unique composition, solemn and chamber at the same time. In the preserved part of the interior the walls are being elaborated with an artificial marble. In the sanctuary the marble carving of a high artistic quality remained intact.
