Description
A square plan church building having four internal piers with tree traditional apses on East probably had a complex dynamic top - a single dome on a high drum, which wasn't embodied in the reconstructed cathedral. In the western part of naos church has choir, stairs located in one-of-a-kind stair towers, joining western angles of the building. Figure graded piers deviding facades in parts and segmenting walls of stair towers, edges over portals and other details show that St. Basil's Church continued stylistic traditions of cathedrals with raised tower composition on the top. This was an expressive style of Russian architecture of the second part of the XII century - beginning of the XIII century tracing back to Church of St. Michael the Archangel (Svirsky) in Smolensk.
The church preserves the paintings made after reconstruction by K. Petrov-Vodkin.
In 1909 the building was restored upon the project by A. Shussev.
