Description
This mansion strikes with cold beauty and peculiarity of facades, with excellent execution of details, powerful plasticity of forms in combination with a refined graphics of a Modern style. The main house is planned rationally and compactly. The entrance is located sideways, on the right facade, which is common for Shekhtel buildings. From the small, trimmed with wooden panels lobby the visitor gets to the hall to which the composition kernel part is assigned. The stained-glass window forming the facial facade of a mansion lights the hall with twelve meters high ceiling. Opposite to the window the huge fireplace repeats the window arch form, being its reduced shadow projection. On both sides of a fireplace there are two doors: one leading to an office of the owner and the other to the stairway landing. Two more doors located on an entrance wall – from a lobby and to the dining room. On a wall opposite to an entrance – a door to the hostess rooms: a living room, an office, a bedroom, a dressing room and a bathroom, all strung to one axis. This part of the house has an exit to the garden on the left facade. One can also exit to the yard from a dining room through a small pantry. Besides a front staircase on the second floor where three nurseries, the educational room and rooms for governesses are located, the mansion has one more exquisite spiral ladder which can be accessed from lobby and the dining room.
The lower part of the halls was sheathed by wooden panels, the upper one was envisioned by the architect for painting – a fresco was ordered to the artist V. E. Borisov-Musatov. Painting was assumed also in the dining room. The architect developed two options of inclusion of painting in the interior, having placed horizontal composition above the fireplace arranged with a buffet, against a lying window of the dining room. In the dining room decorative painting in the form of the stylized geometrical ornament on walls was made on perimeter of walls, in their upper part. The role of picturesque scenery in it is played by the carved wooden lattice executed in the natural forms reminding of round crowns of the Italian stone pines.
After nationalization of Derozhinskaya mansion for a short period it was occupied by out-of-school department of Narkompros. Since 1921 delegates of the III Congress of Komintern lived here and at the end of 1920-s prior to the beginning of 1930-s the Chinese mission located here, later replaced by representations of the Uzbek, Turkmen and Tajik SSR. Since 1959 the mansion is the fixed residence of ambassadors of Australia. In 2009-2013 the house underwent restoration: ceiling paintings and inlaid floors recovered, wooden panels tinted in dark color, and the Musatov painting in the hall was "reconstructed" according to sketches of the artist.
